The sun and the moon
by Eliseo Castro Villa

Meaning of the stamping: The complementary strength of the male and female principals is fundamental in the Huichol culture. The male is associated with the sun "Tau" and female with the moon "Metsa".

Here we see that the face of the sun is painted with sacred drawings made with the yellow powder of the root "Uxa" in preparation for the peyote ceremony. The ceremonial name of the sun is "Weiruka" . eagle.

The moon carries the other important deities; Takutsi Nakawe, Grandmother of growth, represented by her reed; Maxacuaxi, the great-grandfather Deer Tail and Tatewari, the first fire shaman.
